An eagerly awaited arrival at our house is the Running Times, a top-notch running magazine replete with great articles, timely training tips, race schedules, and recent race results. Baptism By Fire

You’d think that a guy who has run as many marathons as I have, and knows as many race directors as I do would think twice, or maybe even three or four times, about creating and directing a brand new marathon. But NO, when I heard rumor that my buddy Terry Smith was going to put on a new race on the Mickelson Trail, I hounded him until he consented to let me help.

It began in the scenic city of Rochford; a tiny town nestled in the upper reaches of the Black Hills. Rochford, elevation 5,200, population 6, boasts a chapel, a bar (the famous Moonshine Gulch Saloon), a university (true! I saw Rochford University painted on the side of a church!), and, of course, a mall. Yes, a mall. Says right over the door, “The Small of America” so there.

 – By

Posted on 10. Aug, 2002

After our April 6, 2002, YAKIMA RIVER CANYON MARATHON (YRCM) runner Alice Kennedy, 42, of Missoula, Montana, sent us an e-mail in which she mentioned that she would be running the inaugural Deadwood-Mickelson Trail Marathon on Sunday, June 9, 2002. That sounded good to us. We signed on and subsequently flew to Rapid City, South Dakota, rented a car and drove 43 miles to Deadwood, SD, for a four day mini-vacation centered around the marathon.

The Finish Line is the Starting Line

 – By

“It’s all over but the shouting,” my mother used to say, and we are now in the shouting stages of the second annual Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon. It was a ‘slam dunk’, a home run, a touchdown, a spike, a goal, a hole-in-one. Jerry, Baron, and I couldn’t be more excited and pleased with the DMTM weekend.

DMTM Report

Tell me I didn’t just run the most scenic marathon I have ever had the luck of running! On a scale of 1 to 10, this is a 10. It was great that the weather cooperated to bring extra punch to the experience. Bright sunny skies dominated the sky for the whole time we were out there, thus giving added beauty to the already majestic views of Mother Nature.
